Reduced-Emission Engine Technology - Caring for Nature
The STIHL Inc. “Caring for Nature” seal identifies its powered products that are more environmentally conscious, producing zero or low exhaust emissions. STIHL Inc. defines “low exhaust emissions” as being cleaner than EPA and/or CARB exhaust emission standards.

    Pre-Separation Air Filtration System
This time-saving technology boosts the efficiency of the engine’s filter system, doubling the time between air filter cleanings. Air drawn into the engine is first separated via centrifugal force, ejecting the heavier dirt particles before being routed to the air filter. This pre-separation means less dirt to be captured by the air filter, resulting in less frequent cleaning and maintenance.

    Anti-Vibration System
STIHL has developed a system for minimizing the vibration levels of handheld outdoor power equipment. The STIHL anti-vibration system helps reduce operator fatigue and provides a more comfortable working experience.

Toolless fuel and oil caps with retainers
Simply lift the lever and twist the caps to remove or tighten. There‘s no need to use a tool to tighten or loosen.

    Side-Access Chain Tensioner
The side-access chain tensioner makes it much more convenient for the user to adjust the saw chain with a bar wrench as opposed to the typical location of the guide bar adjustment screw.
  • Zoom
    Decompression Valve
The decompression valve, also referred to as 'deco' or 'deco valve', vents compression in the cylinder for easier starting. The decompression valve temporarily reduces the compression in the combustion chamber during cranking and helps reduce the effort needed to pull the starter rope. It is opened manually and closes automatically as soon as the engine fires.

Important Information
WARNING! The occurrence called “kickback” can cause serious or fatal injury. Always read the instruction manual carefully before using your saw. STIHL uses a green and yellow color-coding system to help you select a powerhead, bar and chain combination that complies with the kickback requirements of ANSI Standard B175.1 (gasoline-powered saws) and §30 of UL 1662/ ANSI Standard B175.1 (electric chainsaws). Ask your STIHL dealer about safe operating procedures and the advantages of the STIHL Quickstop® chain brake, STIHL Quickstop® Plus (Q) additional chain braking feature, STIHL reduced kickback bars and STIHL low-kickback saw chains.

STIHL recommends the use of green reduced kickback bars and green low kickback chains on all STIHL chainsaws.
* The actual listed guide bar length can vary from the effective cutting length depending upon which power head it is installed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent Saw I bought this saw after reading many reviews on the internet and talking to alot of different people. It has very good power and cuts better than any saw I have ever owned or used. The large chain makes quick work of larger trees and will even rip cut when necessary to split extremely large pieces in halves or quarters. I highly recommend this saw to anyone who cuts alot of wood. October 22, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Toughest A 18 inch tree rolled onto this saw. Bent the bar broke the brake lever. Saw never stopped running. Dug out kill switch, bent the bar back, and kept on cutting. The flex in frame and bar hurt my heart when it happened since I spent so much on this saw. Amazing quality. No other saw could have done this July 20, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Thank you Stihl! I'm 62 and the MS311 is my 5TH saw, just one day here on the farm, proved I made a great purchase. (nobody else but Stihl would take a full page AD out in the WSJ) I've used Stihl before, now it's nice to own one!!! KDT July 19, 2015
Rated 1 out of 5 by junk My ex worked for a Stihl distributor we had a 042 I never had trouble with. Granted the ol grey mare aint what she used to be but I can still pull a rope I can start my 270 and log splitter. I got this peice of junk 2 days ago took it to the mountains without starting it first as the dealer said they had. Over 300 cranks and not even a hint of starting I've taken the spark plug out 4 times in case it flooded. It has not once made a effort to start. Monday it goes back to the dealer. I'm not real impressed with the 270 either. I've used it very little it's not easy to start when I shut it off it doesn't want to restart it'll die and not restart. I think we've bought Stihl based on the name I did but I don't think they are the quality they were. I never had issues with the 042 even after the ex ran off and I was left on my own with it. I won't be buying another Stihl its hard enough going getting wood by myself without spending more time fighting chainsaws than actually getting wood. July 18, 2015
Rated 2 out of 5 by Handles well, plenty of power. I like these saws, but mine is very hard to start, let me rephrase that extremely hard to start and I have only cut down three 12 inch trees with it. I do not have 5 hours on this new saw and it can take 30 min of pulling before it starts. July 18, 2015
Rated 1 out of 5 by Auto oiler problems ( i believe) and very difficult to start Two days ago I returned to the store I had purchased my 250 and 251 models from, gave them back the 251 which no longer worked (see my review of that - they said I'd need to take up with Stihl any issues I had), and, after researching and talking with folks about the farmer models, bought the 311 with the 20 inch bar. After cutting two trees (about two feet in diameter), the chain essentially welded itself to the bar. I was able to pry it loose, but the chain now stood out from the tip of the bar by about 1/4 inch. I returned to the customer repair area of the store I bought it from and they said that that was a normal condition. Obviously it is not. I returned yesterday and received a full refund for my saw. Rated 5 out of 5 by Wokrs Geeat, less tiring than my older 310 Since I finally dropped a tree on my MS 310 (don't ask), I bought a new 311. With the grip isolated from the engine and chain, it is much less fatiguing. I have dropped tress up to 83 feet tall with my 311, cut them to length for my wood stove, and filled my pickup without straining my back.At 68 years old, that makes for a VERY GOOD DAY!When I needed a new saw, I was asked what brand I wanted - there is only one - STIHL ! Rated 1 out of 5 by Always a major struggle to start. Stihl weed eater works great. Still Leaf blower is fantastic. I have loved other stihl products. This chainsaw is no good. It takes a long long time to get it going each use.Following the the step by step instructions included in the manual this thing will not start.Bottom line, this will not be reliable for you. It is brand new. I've cut down 2 trees and spent 3 hours trying to start it total. Multiple times I've needed it, tried to start it and it won't start. Just paid a tree company to cut down a bunch of trees because this wouldn't start.I recommend staying away from MS 311.I have owned 4 other chainsaws, this is the worst for reliability. Avoid.
