Reduced-Emission Engine Technology - Caring for Nature
The STIHL Inc. “Caring for Nature” seal identifies its powered products that are more environmentally conscious, producing zero or low exhaust emissions. STIHL Inc. defines “low exhaust emissions” as being cleaner than EPA and/or CARB exhaust emission standards.

    Pre-Separation Air Filtration System
This time-saving technology boosts the efficiency of the engine’s filter system, doubling the time between air filter cleanings. Air drawn into the engine is first separated via centrifugal force, ejecting the heavier dirt particles before being routed to the air filter. This pre-separation means less dirt to be captured by the air filter, resulting in less frequent cleaning and maintenance.

    Anti-Vibration System

Simply lift the lever and twist the caps to remove or tighten. There‘s no need to use a tool to tighten or loosen.
  • Zoom
    Side-Access Chain Tensioner
The side-access chain tensioner makes it much more convenient for the user to adjust the saw chain with a bar wrench as opposed to the typical location of the guide bar adjustment screw.
  • Zoom
    Decompression Valve
The decompression valve, also referred to as 'deco' or 'deco valve', vents compression in the cylinder for easier starting. The decompression valve temporarily reduces the compression in the combustion chamber during cranking and helps reduce the effort needed to pull the starter rope. It is opened manually and closes automatically as soon as the engine fires.

Important Information
WARNING! The occurrence called “kickback” can cause serious or fatal injury. Always read the instruction manual carefully before using your saw. STIHL uses a green and yellow color-coding system to help you select a powerhead, bar and chain combination that complies with the kickback requirements of ANSI Standard B175.1 (gasoline-powered saws) and §30 of UL 1662/ ANSI Standard B175.1 (electric chain saws). Ask your STIHL dealer about safe operating procedures and the advantages of the STIHL Quickstop® chain brake, STIHL Quickstop® Plus additional chain braking feature (Q), STIHL reduced kickback bars and STIHL low-kickback saw chains.

STIHL recommends the use of green reduced kickback bars and green low kickback chains on all STIHL chain saws.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent Saw I bought this saw after reading many reviews on the internet and talking to alot of different people. It has very good power and cuts better than any saw I have ever owned or used. The large chain makes quick work of larger trees and will even rip cut when necessary to split extremely large pieces in halves or quarters. I highly recommend this saw to anyone who cuts alot of wood. October 22, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by The Best 59cc Chainsaw Ever Made! I have upgraded mine with a rim sprocket assembly and a yellow RS chain.. This saw has and will out-cut an 039, husky 372xp and husky 365sp.. The same quality as any of the professional/commercial grade saws listed above. Fuel efficient, powerful, reliable and great power to weight ratio. My son will enjoy this saw and be able to pass it on to his son. March 5, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by This saw gets the job done! The MS 311 is truly a ranch work horse. The larger fuel and oil tanks are great, extending the time you can be at work with the saw. March 3, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by good power I do chainsaw carvings and I needed a saw with a little more power to do blocking before I do the more detail work. This saw does the job and is relatively light weight for its size. February 21, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Added to 038 Super I've run an 038 Super for 25 years. I started with a 24" bar and wore it out. By then I realized a smaller bar would meet my needs as I no longer was bucking 36" oaks. I went for an 18" bar and wore out 2 chains and almost 2 more. It quit oiling the bar properly and I needed to cut a pecan and several oaks. So I purchased the MS 311 with a 20" bar with the RS chain (yellow). I was amazed and pleased as I sped thru the oaks and while the 311 has slightly less horsepower it has quickly cut thru anything I have put it to. The 038 is being repaired but will be relegated to backup status as the 311 is faster until I reexamine the bar & chain on the 25 year old. February 15, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by Tough and dependable I live out in the country and often have trees come down. This saw has handled all of them. Cuts great and has a lot of power. Paid for its self in one season of cutting. February 12, 2015
Rated 5 out of 5 by LIKE PUTTING A HOT KNIFE THOUGH WARM BUTTER I got my saw about 8 months ago when my last "homeowner" saw blew up. I was interested in the 291 but our local store was out of stock. came home with the 311 due to winter approaching I was not going to wait. I was most pleased. dropped 5 trees the first day. plenty of power easy maintenance, I even let it sit for 3 months and it fired no problem and ran like a champ. only down side I noticed was the weight, I did have to get used to that. but I love it. great saw great price looking at a 250 for the branches. Rated 5 out of 5 by Awesome Saw I have had this saw about 2 months now. It makes me want to cut wood for a living. Unfortunately, my wife demands I keep my day job because I wear out before the saw even gets warmed up and she like to spend a lot of money. This saw is so much fun to use, I can't wait for the weekend to get here so I can cut more firewood. It's easy to maintain, and has plenty of power. I love it! I've learned the hard way and bought 3 less expensive cheaper branded saws that didn't last or work as well. If you are in the market for a quality chainsaw, don't bother with other brands. This will be the last saw you ever need. February 1, 2015
