Reduced-Emission Engine Technology - Caring for Nature
The STIHL Inc. “Caring for Nature” seal identifies its powered products that are more environmentally conscious, producing zero or low exhaust emissions. STIHL Inc. defines “low exhaust emissions” as being cleaner than EPA and/or CARB exhaust emission standards.

    Pre-Separation Air Filtration System
This time-saving technology boosts the efficiency of the engine’s filter system, doubling the time between air filter cleanings. Air drawn into the engine is first separated via centrifugal force, ejecting the heavier dirt particles before being routed to the air filter. This pre-separation means less dirt to be captured by the air filter, resulting in less frequent cleaning and maintenance.

    Side-Access Chain Tensioner

    Decompression Valve
The decompression valve, also referred to as 'deco' or 'deco valve', vents compression in the cylinder for easier starting. The decompression valve temporarily reduces the compression in the combustion chamber during cranking and helps reduce the effort needed to pull the starter rope. It is opened manually and closes automatically as soon as the engine fires.

Important Information
WARNING! The occurrence called “kickback” can cause serious or fatal injury. Always read the instruction manual carefully before using your saw. STIHL uses a green and yellow color-coding system to help you select a powerhead, bar and chain combination that complies with the kickback requirements of ANSI Standard B175.1 (gasoline-powered saws) and §30 of UL 1662/ ANSI Standard B175.1 (electric chainsaws). Ask your STIHL dealer about safe operating procedures and the advantages of the STIHL Quickstop® chain brake, STIHL Quickstop® Plus (Q) additional chain braking feature, STIHL reduced kickback bars and STIHL low-kickback saw chains.

STIHL recommends the use of green reduced kickback bars and green low kickback chains on all STIHL chainsaws.
* The actual listed guide bar length can vary from the effective cutting length based on which powerhead it is installed on.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent Saw I bought this saw after reading many reviews on the internet and talking to alot of different people. It has very good power and cuts better than any saw I have ever owned or used. The large chain makes quick work of larger trees and will even rip cut when necessary to split extremely large pieces in halves or quarters. I highly recommend this saw to anyone who cuts alot of wood. October 22, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by why settle for second best? If you can't afoord 1 save up until you can! I have never owned anything but STIHL chainsaws. I have gone in the woods with lots of folks to bring out firewood or clear out an area to build something. Many was the time when they were fixing and I was cutting, s never considered any other brand. Now I have this bad boy .... WOW.... if you need it down and in pieces this guy will do it fast and efficiently. My last still lasted me over 20 years and all I ever have heated with is wood so I use them a lot. I have only brought down a few trees with this one but I am expecting a long relationship with it. And the icing on the cake...... The folks at Southside.... you can trust them and they will teach you all you need to know about the product you buy. May 24, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by WORK HORSE This dude is "The Bomb". Always starts on second or third pull (only because that is the way the choke is designed), and runs like a scalded ape! Plenty of power. Cuts through hard woods like a hot knife through butter. Best chain saw I've EVER owned....hands down! May 21, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by The only saw that has never failed My grandfather has one of these. My neighbor has used it i have used it we are both fairly new to chainsaws. My grandfather has never shown it any mercy he runs it wide open every cut he makes. Being the beginner that i am i have accidently done things to this saw during use that i did not know were incorrect these things would shorten the life of other less durable brands. We have run it to heck and back for about four years now and it still runs as if it were brand new i cant say the same for our other saw. Which the heat from the engine has melted the top cover. So when our other saws fail us the stihl ms 311 or as we call it big stihl is always there to bail us out. May 13, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by Best East Coast ranch saw that money can buy. I *love* this saw. It's big, it's powerful and it runs like a scalded dog. It will chew through a 2 foot tree like a fat kid through cake, and leave an impressive pile of chips at the end of its rooster tail. It's not a "Pro" saw, but it isn't intended to be. If you want to drop that kind of coin, or if you run a business where you'll use the saw every single day, then good on ya mate. Otherwise, I have not found a better runner. This saw LOVES full chisel pro chains. No, you aren't supposed to use those because they are dangerous, but whatever... learn to use a saw first, and it won't kick back and eat your face off. Chainsaws are a lot like the rest of life; don't do stupid things, and everything goes so much smoother. The pros: Exceptional power; well over 4 H.P. Will spin a 20" chain with no complaints. It will easily run a 25" bar with a full-skip chain. As long as you keep the chain sharp, it will just go through wood like butter. If you are making sawdust instead of chips, hit that thing with a file! Darned near impossible to stall out in the cut (again, if you know how to run a saw). Decent fuel/bar oil capacity. Great fuel economy. Nice solid feel, very responsive, and excellent vibration dampening. Many pro features without the pro price. IT'S A STIHL!The cons: It's heavier and less powerful than the 362, which has the same displacement, but hey; it's also much cheaper. It is a bummer to start until you learn the secrets of this saw: 1) Once it sputters cold, switch to fast idle and pull twice, 'cause it probably won't light up on the first one. If it still feels temperamental then switch to "run" and give a few yanks. It WILL start, just don't be so critical over needing to pull a cord 5 times or so. 2) after you've shut 'er down and pick it up in 30 minutes or whatever, DO NOT be tempted to use anything other than "run". You might have to pull it 3 or 4 times, but it will fire every time once it's ready. If you choke the saw warm, it will take 10-12 pulls to get you going, minimum. You might even need to pull the plug if it's being really stubborn... :/ I've had a lot of saws, and yes this one is kinda picky. The Stihl kill switch: Meh. Never liked pushing something up to kill a saw, especially if it's just out of reach. I have pretty large hands, (I wear XL gloves, and that's only because I can't ever find XXL gloves) and it's still cumbersome. I can't imagine what it would be like if I had little girly hands. In summary, if I had to pick one saw to keep on a desert island, this would be the one. May 3, 2016
Rated 2 out of 5 by Do not buy Sorry piece of it. Not up to stihl standards. Would not buy r recommend to anybody hands down the worst stihl product I have ever used April 10, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Saw I needed something bigger then the Farm Boss and this works great. It's plenty powerful and works great for everything I use it for. Great for dropping trees and cutting fire wood. April 4, 2016
