Reduced-Emission Engine Technology - Caring for Nature
The STIHL Inc. “Caring for Nature” seal identifies its powered products that are more environmentally conscious, producing zero or low exhaust emissions. STIHL Inc. defines “low exhaust emissions” as being cleaner than EPA and/or CARB exhaust emission standards.

    Pre-Separation Air Filtration System
This time-saving technology boosts the efficiency of the engine’s filter system, doubling the time between air filter cleanings. Air drawn into the engine is first separated via centrifugal force, ejecting the heavier dirt particles before being routed to the air filter. This pre-separation means less dirt to be captured by the air filter, resulting in less frequent cleaning and maintenance.

    Decompression Valve
The decompression valve, also referred to as 'deco' or 'deco valve', vents compression in the cylinder for easier starting. The decompression valve temporarily reduces the compression in the combustion chamber during cranking and helps reduce the effort needed to pull the starter rope. It is opened manually and closes automatically as soon as the engine fires.

Important Information
WARNING! The occurrence called “kickback” can cause serious or fatal injury. Always read the instruction manual carefully before using your saw. STIHL uses a green and yellow color-coding system to help you select a powerhead, bar and chain combination that complies with the kickback requirements of ANSI Standard B175.1 (gasoline-powered saws) and §30 of UL 1662/ ANSI Standard B175.1 (electric chainsaws). Ask your STIHL dealer about safe operating procedures and the advantages of the STIHL Quickstop® chain brake, STIHL Quickstop® Plus (Q) additional chain braking feature, STIHL reduced kickback bars and STIHL low-kickback saw chains.

STIHL recommends the use of green reduced kickback bars and green low kickback chains on all STIHL chainsaws.
* The actual listed guide bar length can vary from the effective cutting length based on which powerhead it is installed on.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent Saw I bought this saw after reading many reviews on the internet and talking to alot of different people. It has very good power and cuts better than any saw I have ever owned or used. The large chain makes quick work of larger trees and will even rip cut when necessary to split extremely large pieces in halves or quarters. I highly recommend this saw to anyone who cuts alot of wood. October 22, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by All the power I will ever need I bought this saw after getting fed up with cheap under powered big box store saws. I heat primarily with wood here in north east Ohio. I use about 4-5 cord a year. I recently had the pleasure of dropping a huge 40+ inch oak, now I know sthil recommens a 20 inch bar on this saw but they also recommend the same bar on one of their saws with .7 less hp. With that being said I purchased a 24 inch bar with full comp full square chisel chain and it has no problems. I also purchased full skip chain and this thing really flys. The saw is a little heavy but it is not a problem for me. I will soon be purchasing a smaller saw for cutting branches and in tree work. Thanks sthil, you make the task of keeping my family warm easier and actually fun. July 31, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by Plenty of power for 60c.c.'s Just purchased the 311 2 weeks ago. Up to then I had owned Poulan's, homelite's, craftsman's, and one husquvarna. I would get less than a weeks worth of firewood cut before the would break down and need repairing. There were years that I would go thru 3-4 used saws just to get my winter wood needs. This year the Mrs. convinced me to go new and better quality. After some research and talking with the Still dealer I chose the 311.Been cutting beech thats over 24+" across for the past two weeks and God do I love this saw! Goes thru the wood like a hot knife thru warm butter! It cuts faster than i expected. Starts right up when following cold start instructions. Once it's warmed up it doesn't even need a full pull to start, mine starts up with about 10"-12" of pull. The only downside i see with this tool is bar length. (And that was my choice.). Carrying it thru downed treetops can be cumbersome, but again that was my choice.Worth every penny the Mrs. and I spent on it! July 14, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by It's a STIHL! My friend and I went out to cut firewood. Both of us with brand new saws. His was a Husky, mine the 311. I had 1/2 a cord cut before he could even get his started! My second Stihl, the first being a 032 I used for over 20 years, which I loved but someone wanted more than me. July 12, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by Perfect for cutting firewood. I needed a bigger saw to cut threw about 5 cords a year with. My previous saw was small and was more of a homeowners saw. I only have bought stihl chainsaws and my favorite part about them is their reliability. It runs very smooth has plenty of power for my needs. I got mine with a 20 inch bar witch is perfect for firewood, I also bought the 6 pack of oil to give me a 2 year warranty. June 23, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by It's a great saw I cut trees down for a living for a few years and then some I needed a new saw i have a 044 and a 391 there also awesome peaces of equipment it's a shame there is no 044 on the market these days best saw ever the 311 I just bought ran the heckoutta it for the last couple weeks all day everyday and had no problems what so ever all the bad reviews that I am reading are from people that have no clue what they are doing with a saw from what I am reading or do not know how to keep up with what needs done to a saw I will 100% back this saw its not a professional saw but the speed and toughness of this saw for a home owner of fire wood type of guy it's perfect another amazing product from these guys June 9, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great saw and all you need I have had a Stihl MS170 for about 8 years and had used one my dad had before that. I was always happy with the quality and reliability. It was perfectly sized for when we lived in the suburbs, but we have since moved to another house (heated with wood) on a wooded 5 acre lot. I decided to buy a bigger saw and I did TONS of research. I was debating between the MS311, MS391, and MS362. I was leaning toward the MS362 being a "pro" saw, although it was obviously more expensive. I talked to the salesman at our local dealer and told him my needs and the models I was considering. To my surprise, he actually recommended the MS311 or MS391 based on my described use. After staring at the 3 saws for a long time, I chose the MS311 because it was a good deal being on sale at the time. I had a moment where I realized that while I was going to be using the saw a lot, I was not going to be using it all day and every day. I take care of all of my tools and I am sure this one will last me. So, got the saw, a woodcutter kit of PPE, felling wedges, chain file, and a high end axe (I was on a roll) and the total coincidentally came within a few cents of what the MS362 would be by itself. Seeing that confirmed to me that I had made the right choice. I took the saw home and started it right up. As others have said, follow the starting instructions and use the full choke sparingly if at all. Man is this saw powerful and sounds great. Feels like getting out of an economy car and into a muscle car. What am I missing hiving the MS311 and not the MS391 or MS362? I have no idea because I bought this one and I am very happy with it. I'll keep the little one for liming as this does weigh quite a bit more. My advice: buy it. June 1, 2016
Rated 5 out of 5 by why settle for second best? If you can't afoord 1 save up until you can! I have never owned anything but STIHL chainsaws. I have gone in the woods with lots of folks to bring out firewood or clear out an area to build something. Many was the time when they were fixing and I was cutting, s never considered any other brand. Now I have this bad boy .... WOW.... if you need it down and in pieces this guy will do it fast and efficiently. My last still lasted me over 20 years and all I ever have heated with is wood so I use them a lot. I have only brought down a few trees with this one but I am expecting a long relationship with it. And the icing on the cake...... The folks at Southside.... you can trust them and they will teach you all you need to know about the product you buy. May 24, 2016
